On April 4 2005, the Gender Recognition Act came into force. For the first time, transsexual people will acquire legal recognition of their new gender. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 people may wish to take advantage of this new right.
The Gender Recognition Panel has set up a website (see Related Links below) containing information and advice for transsexual people who wish to apply for gender recognition. Applications under the fast track process will be considered from 4 April 2005. The website also contains application packs.
