An Action Plan for Northamptonshire
The Social Inclusion & Equalities team is currently developing a social inclusion action plan as a strategic response to tackling social exclusion and inequality in the county.
An outcome of the Year 1-2 Best Value Review of Social Inclusion carried out during 2001-02,the Action Plan aims to work towards:
- Fair and equal access to employment, goods and services for all and promoting active citizenship
- Making services flexible, user-led and responsive to diverse needs
The framework will:
- Find joined-up solutions through joined-up action, tackling disadvantage through multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working
- Enable decision-making on the basis of evidence and need, allocating resources towards the most vulnerable sections of society
- Develop a shared understanding of social exclusion and how it can be collectively challenged and changed
- Outline how the council should move forward in achieving its aspirations as defined in its
Equality Policy (pdf format 154kb)
Ongoing work
At present work is on to determine:
- Definitions of social inclusion
- Factors causing exclusion, its characteristics and effects
- Demographic, community and area profiles in Northamptonshire
- Steps needed to make a decisive impact on exclusion
- Progress achieved in Northamptonshire around tackling exclusion
- Identify gaps in achieving social inclusion
- Action plan for delivery
The framework is being developed through a process of:
- Assessing its scope, studying national and European models of practice
- Addressing likely barriers and gaps to social inclusion and equalities
- Assessing where we are at as a council in terms of social inclusion
- Building up on the Best Value Review findings and national framework of social inclusion
- Wide consultation with internal and external stakeholders
Work has been in progress in the area since January 2004 and seeks to consult widely with partners across the public, private and voluntary sectors in its development.
