Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor 1603-1617 had been made Viscount Brackley in 1616. The manor house is today Winchester House School but it was never a major residence of the family. The Earls and later Dukes of Bridgewater actually had their principal seat at Ashridge in Hertfordshire. One of the Dukes built the Town Hall in Brackley. The Duke of Sutherland inherited the Brackley and Lancashire estates in 1803 and left them to his second son Lord Francis (d.1857) who was made Earl of Ellesmere in 1846.

Valentine's sister Eleanor married Captain Charles Fitzgerald, governor Western Australia 1848-1856. Gervase Elwes's sons were also interesting and successful, Simon was a portrait artist and Royal Academician, Guy was an architect and interior designer, Rudolph an actor, Monsignor Valentine became a Papal Prelate and Sir Richard was a High Court judge and recorder of Northampton. The heir Geoffrey sold Billing in 1930 and moved the family back to Lincolnshire buying Elsham Hall in 1931. Sadly Great Billing Hall was demolished in 1956.
