Gething 1876-1946, 126 docs., ref. Gething

Robert Cordey Gething, a mechanical engineer and captain in the Royal Artillery grew up in Newport (Monmouthshire). He married Anna Hamilton Williams in 1939 and lived in Kettering and Northampton.

School and college papers, papers on finances of Gething and his father, on motor car 1927-1939 and on command of a Territorial company in the Northants. Regiment 1930s. Literary papers of Mrs Gething, her diary 1916-c.1920 and letters, family photographs. Plans of electricity lines 1932.

Gompertz (Glendon) 1287-1940, 508 docs., ref. G(G )

The Booths were stewards to the Dukes of Montagu. John Booth bought Glendon Hall from the Lane family in 1758. Mrs Gompertz, the donor of the collection, was a Booth by birth.

Estate papers for Glendon, Barford and Rothwell from 1756 with servants wages 1760-1766. There are few title deeds. Personal correspondence and papers 1794-1913 including early 19th century bills, travel journals, France c.1770, 1828/30 & north of England 1834. Papers on the Duke of Montagu's troop of Carabineers and sheriff's accounts 1794, 1818. Papers of the Rewell, Bragge and Wilkinson families of London 1651-1798. Papers of Dr. John Home and the Reeves family of Birmingham 1796-1897.

Gotch (Kettering) 1670-1946, 1500 docs., ref. G(K)

Thomas Gotch (d.1806), from a Leicestershire farming family, established a boot manufacturing and banking business in Kettering at the end of the 18th century. His son John Cooper Gotch (d.1852), a leading Baptist, continued both businesses and the bulk of the papers in this collection relate to him. Two of his sons John Davis Gotch (d.1870) and Thomas Henry Gotch (d.1891) succeeded him but the bank collapsed in 1856. A third son Frederick William was a Baptist minister. T.H. Gotch had 4 sons one of whom was John Alfred Gotch, an architect, and leading authority on 16th and early 17th century architecture.

An important collection of 19th century papers on politics, business and social history in Kettering. Including papers on navy shoe contracts 1803-1816, mail robbery 1812-1814, poor relief 1782-1824, reports of the Linen Committee 1819-1823, rick fires 1839, Baptists 1813-1833, the Poor Law 1837-1857, elections 1820-1880, banking 1815-1857, and emigration 1830s. Personal correspondence 1790-1885.

Grafton (Wakefield Lodge) c.1600-1921, 4453 docs. & 28 boxes, ref. G & Maps 433-465, 4208-4268

The Honour of Grafton, a group of manors in the south east of the county, was granted to Catherine of Braganza, Charles II's Queen, for life in 1673. On her death it was to pass to the Earl of Arlington. By the time she died in 1705 Arlington was also dead so the Honour passed to the 2nd Duke of Grafton his grandson and heir. The Dukedom had been created for one of Charles II's natural sons by Lady Castlemaine. Wakefield Lodge was rebuilt by the 2nd Duke as his residence in Northamptonshire but the main Ducal seat is Euston Hall in Suffolk. The Dukes of Grafton retained their Northamptonshire estates until 1921.

Note: Many of the later 19th century papers have been badly damaged by damp.

Grant (Litchborough) 1440-1904, 98 boxes

For background to the Grants see below 'Grant Ives'. The collection is only summarily listed.

Deeds and legal papers, principally in origin a solicitors' archive, of the practises of Edward Bloxham at Stony Stratford (Buckinghamshire) late 18th/early 19th century. Thomas Grant was Bloxham's executor and heir. His brother Hopcraft Bloxham was a baker at Towcester.

Papers on savings banks 1816 and for work at assizes and quarter sessions. Papers and deeds for conveyancing at Cosgrove, Wicken, Passenham, Hartwell, Pattishall, Potterspury, Abthorpe, Deanshanger, Harpole, the Stratfords, Loughton and Newport Pagnell (Buckinghamshire) and Pavenham (Bedfordshire). Letters from Lord Maynard about his estate at Passenham 1750-1775. Estate papers for the Forrester estate at Thornton (Buckinghamshire) mid 18th century and the Price Withers estate at Westbury (Buckinghamshire) 1770s. 18th century Calverton manor court papers (Buckinghamshire). Grant Ives (Bradden) 1429-1890, 470 docs. & 14 boxes, ref. GI

The Rev. William Ives purchased the manor of Bradden in 1677 from Gaius Mathew. It had been with the Mathews since 1486 when John Mathew, a London mercer, purchased it. Ives was rector of Greens Norton. The estate descended in the Ives family until 1888 when it passed to the Grant family of Litchborough. Thomas Grant had married Ann Ives in 1776.

The Grants came from Scotland but Thomas Grant (d.1803), a surgeon at Towcester, bought an estate at Litchborough in 1792. His son William, a barrister and Charity Commissioner (d.1840), purchased the manor of Maidford in 1811. A second son Edward had children and his heir William (d.1868) married Frances Simpson Pack of Flore. Wilfred Dryden Grant (d. 1911), the younger son of William, inherited Bradden and added the name Ives. His elder brother Edward remained at Litchborough.

Griffin (Braybrooke) 1299-1901, 92 docs., ref G(B)

Sir Edward Griffin of Braybrooke (d.1569) bought the dissolved priory at Ulverscroft in Leicestershire in 1565. The family's main estates were at Dingley and Braybrooke until they were sold after the 3rd Lord Griffin's death in 1742.

Mainly deeds for Ulverscroft Priory (Leicestershire) 1558-1829. Some miscellaneous deeds and papers for properties elsewhere including Braybrooke. Conveyance of Braybrooke Castle 1649.

Gunning (Horton) 1342-1899, 926 docs., ref. G(H)

The Gunnings were an Irish family. Sir Robert Gunning (d.1816) was a diplomat and served as a minister in Denmark 1765-1771, in Prussia in 1771 and in Russia 1772-1775. He was rewarded with a baronetcy in 1778 and purchased the Horton estate in 1782. It had belonged to a branch of the Montagus who had held the Earldom of Halifax for two generations. The 2nd Earl of Halifax (d.1771) was a politician, serving as a Secretary of State, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and First Lord of the Admiralty. The Gunnings stayed at Horton Hall until 1888 when the 5th Baronet sold it to Pickering Phipps, the brewer. Later it was sold to George Winterbottom. The mansion was unfortunately demolished in 1936.

Mainly deeds for Horton, Hackleton, Piddington, Denton and Quinton, Ekeley (Buckinghamshire), Eltham (Kent) and estates in Cos. Roscommon, Longford and Dublin in Ireland. 18th century legal papers on Irish estates and rent rolls 1779-1802 & 1820-1842. Northants. estate accounts 1634, 1639, 1640 and rentals 1634-1657.
