Arriving by car
Directions from M1
As you travel up or down the M1, come off at junction 15 (the first exit going north and the last exit going south for Northampton). This is the easiest route to the Record Office from the M1.Take the A45 towards Northampton (it is a dual carriageway). Take the exit off the dual carriageway signed to [Northampton] town centre. This comes after a couple of miles. You will have just passed a small service area. The exit has quite a long slip road, and has Wootton Hall Park signed off it. You come up to a large roundabout with lights. Stay in the inside lane and take the first turning on the left, which is the ring road west. After about 50 yards or so, turn left into Wootton Hall Park. The record office itself is situated within the park. Turn right into a small road shortly after the ambulance station. There is a small sign on the corner for the Fire Station, Record Office and Archaeology. The record office car park is the second one on the left. From the car park, come through the gate and down the path between the two blocks of the building towards the front door. There is an entry phone on the wall to your left.
Directions from Oxford
Follow A43 from Oxford to Northampton (which includes travelling one junction along the M40). As you near Northampton, you pass under the M1 (at Junction 15A/Rothersthorpe Services) on the dual carriageway. Keep going on the dual carriageway (still A43) until it meets the Ring Road east at a roundabout. Turn right onto the Ring Road east (Wellingborough). Follow this road, straight across the next roundabout. When you come to a large roundabout with traffic lights, take the second exit. Move into the outer lane as you approach the next roundabout, known as the Queen Eleanor Interchange. This also has traffic lights. You need to be in the far right hand lane as you need to go all the way round in order to go back up the other side of the dual carriageway. After about 50 yards, turn left into Wootton Hall Park. The Record Office is situated within the park.
Directions from Uppingham and from Stamford
From Uppingham, follow A6003 towards Corby, and then Kettering.
From Stamford, follow the A43 signs to Kettering.
At the outskirts of Kettering, pick up and follow A43 Northampton signs, which will lead briefly on and then off the A14. Follow the A43 signs all the way to the outskirts of Northampton. There you come to a large roundabout with traffic lights on it. Keep following the A43 signs (for Oxford now) which will lead you down the Lumbertubs Way (a dual carriageway) to join up with the A45. Keep following A43 (Oxford)/A45 West (Coventry) signs towards Northampton. Ignore the first turn to the town, Barnes Meadow roundabout, and continue over the flyover. Move into the left hand lane, following signs for Oxford and the ring road west. This will take you off the dual carriageway and onto a large roundabout, controlled by traffic lights and known as the Queen Eleanor Interchange. You need to be in the middle lane at this point. Take the fourth exit off the roundabout and after about 50 yards, turn left into Wooton Hall Park. The record office is situated within the park.
Arriving by bus
Buses run regularly from the bus station in the centre of town. The nearest bus stop to the Record Office is just after the Queen Eleanor Cross on the London Rd. The walk from there will take around five minutes, but you should be aware that the route takes you over the dual carriageway (A45 - Mereway). This can be extremely busy at certain times of the day, and unfortunately there is no pelican/zebra crossing.
