What does 'Scheduling' mean?
'Scheduling' provides statutory protection for archaeological remains and prior consent must be obtained for any works that would affect the site.
This includes construction and other development work, changes in agricultural practice and also more minor works and metal detecting.
English Heritage is responsible for the designation of Scheduled Monuments and advises government on applications for Scheduled Monument Consent.
Locations
There are just 175 Scheduled Monuments in Northamptonshire - some have visible upstanding remains such as the earthwork castle of Alderton Mount, the medieval manor site at Braybrooke or the deserted medieval village site of Nobold, near Clipston.
Others consist primarily of buried archaeology such as the Roman town of Irchester.
