Sites and Monuments Record

What is the sites and monuments record?

The SMR is a public service available to anyone researching the history and archaeology of the county.

It is the main source of information on archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes in the county and is used to help formulate conservation and planning advice for the county.

Is there a charge to use it?

Use of the SMR is free to all members of the public, schools and researchers.

Enquirers using the SMR for commercial purposes, such as developers and consultants, are charged for the time taken for staff to process their enquiry.

When is it available?

The SMR is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Due to limited space, appointments must be made in advance.
