Northamptonshire is the largest part of the Milton Keynes and South Midlands (MKSM) growth area, one of the four growth areas in the greater south east identified by the government in the Sustainable Communities Plan in February 2003 (see related links below).
Within these growth areas a step change is occurring to deliver successful, thriving and inclusive communities. The MKSM area includes the whole of Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Luton and Bedfordshire and part of Buckinghamshire.
The Sub-Regional Strategy (SRS) (see related links below) sets out the key elements of growth in the MKSM area. It informs growth at the local level and to guide the investment decisions of the public and private sectors.
There are two main locations for growth in the county. These are:
- West Northamptonshire, with a particular focus on Northampton but with growth also at Daventry and Towcester.
- North Northamptonshire with a particular focus on Corby/ Kettering/Wellingborough.
Local delivery vehicles have been set up for each location to facilitate growth (for West Northamptonshire this is the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation, in North Northamptonshire this is an Urban Regeneration Company called the North Northants Development Company).
The county council produces a regular e-bulletin that provides an update on the significant range of activities currently taking place in Northamptonshire as part of the Government's Sustainable Communities Plan (SCP).
The River Nene Regional Park (RNRP) will be a key element by which green space provision (vital to the government's vision of the 'liveability' of the area) will be accomplished within the MKSM growth area. The RNRP will deliver a network of environmental, sport and cultural projects.
As part of ensuring that growth benefits Northamptonshire, the County Council has outlined its approach to Planning Obligations. In addition the County Council seeks to influence the strategies, plans and programmes of stakeholders and investors through responding to key consultations.
