The most important action we can all take is to reduce the amount rubbish we throw away.
Paper
- Read the online version of your favourite newspaper.
- Opt for e-statements from your bank and sign up to your utilities supplier's e-bills where possible.
- Only print out email when you really need to.
- Send e-cards rather than traditional greetings cards.
- Refuse useless flyers and pamphlets.
- Sign up to the Mail Preference Service (MPS) to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive through the post. Visit the Say No to Junk Mail page to find out more.
Food Waste
- Only buy what you know you need. Uneaten food will only end up being thrown away which is a complete waste of money.
- Stick to a shopping list and resist impulse buys.
- Cook up leftovers to make a family dinner the next day. For example boiled rice could be made into special fried rice.
Plastic
- Buy the largest bottle of your favourite drink rather than buying lots of small bottles.
- Buy your household products in bulk.
- Avoid over packaged items.
- Say no to free carrier bags.
