Managing our carbon emissions
The council works to control its own carbon emissions through the 'Carbon Management Action Plan', adopted in July 2005. This aims to minimise carbon emissions from all the main sources, including:
- energy use in buildings (offices and schools)
- waste from offices and schools
- the council's transport fleet
- staff commuting
- street lighting and landfill of waste (monitored in CMAP but covered by separate plans)
Key facts and figures
- The total emissions for county council direct activities (2003/04) (excluding landfill and street lighting) are 51,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 equivalent)
- This includes energy use in schools (33,300 tonnes) and energy use in non-school (13,700 tonnes)
- Council's overall reduction target is 25% compared to predicted levels in 2010
- The reduction forecast from actions already planned is 7.8%
- The reduction required from further actions to be identified is 17.2%
A progress report on implementing the action plan will be published in autumn 2007, to be followed by a revised and updated plan from 2008/09.
