Thanks to an additional grant form central government, the service is this year and for the next two years, is embarking on the delivery of a range of free/heavily subsidised whole class instrumental and vocal workshops. Wider Opportunities will be available to all Key Stage 2 schools with the aim of meeting the government’s ambition that every child should have a meaningful hands on experience of music making.
From September 2008, Northamptonshire Primary/Junior/Lower schools will have the potential to join a programme which, in the first year, will be 100% free.
What’s Involved?
Within the coming three academic years and subject to school’s agreement, the Service will provide a class or year group with a music making project using real instruments or the voice. These will last for two new terms in most instances or six terms for wind band projects coinciding with Autumn/Spring or Summer.
Projects offered are:
- Let’s Play Strings: designed principally for year 3 students. The class will be allocated Violins and Cellos (sometimes string basses)
- Let’s Play guitar: designed for year 4 students but can be adapted to year 5
- Let’s Play Samba: a course that has the flexibility to cover most years at Key Stage 2 (the instruments do take up a lot of space and will need to be stored in your school). There’s also a potential noise issue – by their nature, they’re quite loud but lots of fun
- Let’s Sing: has flexibility to cover most years at Key Stage 2
- Let’s Play Woodwind/Brass: designed for year 5 students but all the projects are allocated for this coming academic year.
