Moving into or within Northamptonshire

Applying for a school place outside of the normal transfer times

If you move into Northamptonshire and require a school place outside of the normal transfer times please contact the Admissions Team. They will be able to advise you about the schools in the area and the availability of places.

You will need to complete the general application form below and return it to the Admissions Team.

Places cannot be allocated on the basis of intended future changes of address unless house moves have been confirmed through the exchange of contracts or the signing of formal lease agreement.

Documentary evidence in the form of a solicitors letter to confirm exchange of contracts or a rental agreement may be required. The County Council reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence to support your claim to residence.

This form is for pupils moving into or within the County and requiring a school place outside of normal transfer times. Do not use this form to apply for a year 7, year 9 or Reception Place for September 2009.

NB. Only one application can be made in any one academic year for any school. If there is a significant change in the circumstances of either the school, parent or child a second application may be considered by the county council. This form may not be used for a second application. If you do consider there has been a significant change, in the first instance you must write to the Admissions Team with your reasons.

How can I find my nearest / linked school?

For a list of towns and villages and their link to schools please see the Information for Parent's Booklets below.

Please note that Northamptonshire do not operate a ‘catchment area’ system. Some schools do have a linked area (this is defined within their admission criteria) and children living in the area have some priority at transfer times.

However, if you move into a linked area for a school outside of the normal transfer times we cannot always guarantee a place at your linked area school if the admission number has already been reached in your child’s year group.

What happens next?

Once the Admissions team receive your completed application form and documentary evidence of your move (if applicable) they will contact the schools named as preferences on the form. If we can offer a place at one of your preferred schools you will be notified in writing and will be asked to contact the Headteacher to confirm a start date for your child.

If you make a preference for an own admission authority school (foundation or voluntary aided status) you will be referred to the school if there is a possibility of a place.

If the published admission number of your preferred school(s) has been reached in your child's year group we would be unable to offer a place at the school. You may put your child's name on a waiting list if you wish.

If we are unable to offer a place at any of the schools named as preferences, we will offer a place at the nearest school with places available.

What happens if I have not moved, but still want to move my child to another school?

If your child currently attends a school within reasonable distance to your home address and you are making an application to move your child to another school in the area, your application will be processed on the last Thursday of the month. You will be informed in writing whether a place is available at your preferred school as soon as possible after this date.
