From September 2008, the new School Lunch Grant will replace the Targeted School Meals Grant (5a) and the School Meals Grant (5b).
The new grant will run from 2008/09 for three years. The funding for 2008/09 will be £1,062,762. This will be repeated for the subsequent years of the grant at the same level.
Following the change towards healthier food many local authorities have seen a reduction in take-up of school lunches. For this reason, the DCSF have announced a change of focus from the previous funding.
The purpose of the new, ring-fenced School Lunch Grant is to increase the take up of school lunches, specifically by helping to keep the price of a school lunch down.
Therefore, schools cannot use the funding to subsidise existing provision unless the price of a school lunch is reduced and take up increases.
Please note: Schools that do not have a contract for provision or do not provide their own lunches are not entitled to any of the funding.
