The amount of time young people are in school for national curriculum related study is approximately 15% of their time.
Study Support is an initiative promoted by the county council to:
- Address the needs of young people in the 85% of time spent out of school
- Create additional learning opportunities for young people 5 - 19 years
- Support school improvement
- Part of extended schools
- Target young people with additional needs:
- Young people looked after
- SEN
- Vulnerable groups
- Gifted and Talented
- Underachieving pupils
- Disability groups
Young people are entitled to have as part of school each week two hour's of Study Support Activities.
The DCFS is making bursaries available for disadvantage young people from 2008 to ensure cost is not a barrier to access.
Study Support is provided through different agencies: Study Support Partners.
Study Support has a coordination team which in Northamptonshire is located within the Children and Young Peoples Service; Extended Services.
The accountable body for Study Support is the Study Support Steering Group that meets termly. The steering group has representation from the schools, LASI, Libraries, the Youth Service and Study Support agencies.
The networking body for Study Support is the External Partnership Group that meets twice a year.

Study Support activities promote educational achievement through:
- enrichment activities that offer new opportunities for learning
- enabling activities that develop basic and key skills
- extending activities that build on existing school based work
