What is an Extended School
An extended school recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children and young people to achieve their potential, and therefore decides to work in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children and young people and with the local community.
Key considerations should be:
- Children’s wellbeing and high educational standards go hand in hand
- There is no blueprint for the type and number of activities that a school might provide or how they might be organised.
- The starting point should be the many and varied issues or barriers that might be preventing pupils learning effectively and achieving the 5 Every Child Matters Outcomes
Whilst many schools may choose to develop an even richer mix of services, all mainstream and special schools are expected to consider providing access to the following:
- Childcare for those of Primary age
- A sage place to be for secondary age pupils.
This should be combined with:
- Access to a varied menu of study support, play and leisure activities
- Swift & Easy Access to specialist services
- Parent Support
- Community access to facilities
