There is significant evidence to demonstrate that, from the earliest years through to adolescence, the impact a parental influence has on a child's outcomes is vital. The majority of parents will admit that they need help and support at some time.
Schools working closely with parents and other agencies are expected to ensure that all parents, especially those who may lack the motivation, skills or confidence, can access the following:
- Information, advice and support - on a range of issues and services in order to support their child effectively. This is particularly important at key points of transition, ie between primary and secondary school.
The Northamptonshire Children’s Services Directory supports this aspect of parent support.
- Family learning - the chance to learn alongside their children can have a significant impact and parent’s confidence to support their child’s learning out of school.
- Parenting support - through one to one support, parenting programmes, and support in accessing specialist services if required.
In Northamptonshire, schools already have a range of staff working with parents to support children’s learning. These include:
- Parent Support Advisers
- Learning Mentors
- Family Support Workers
- Home School Support Workers
