Procedures and related forms are available that outline the process all schools should follow when a pupil is identified as being unable to attend school for a continuous period of at least three school weeks due to illness or injury. These follow the DfES guidance document for pupils with medical needs.
It is important that Northamptonshire County Council schools request involvement of the Hospital and Outreach Education team (C&YPS) and inform their Education Welfare Officer when these absences occur.
The procedures and forms can be downloaded from the Related Documents listed below. These are arranged in a pertinent order for the practitioners to use. They can be freely copied.
These procedures form part of a policy for Access to Education for Pupils with Medical Needs which detail more clearly the role of the Hospital and Outreach Education team.
Schools should consider this group of pupils when reviewing their SEN policy. Statements should be made as to how the school will support and who will be identified as the ‘link person’.
