Employing a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) requires a considerable commitment by a school to the early professional development of a new entrant to the profession.
There are statutory requirements that have to be met to ensure every NQT has their rightful entitlement. This page will provide schools with information that will enable them to know what has to be done and who should be involved.
Step 1 - The Headteacher and Governing Body interview an NQT
- Check if the NQT has Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Check the NQT has passed all necessary skills tests.
- On appointment agree the start of the induction period.
- The Headteacher and Governing Body plan how the school will carry out the requirements for monitoring, support and assessment, as set out in the statutory regulations and guidance
- The Headteacher and Governing Body allocate an induction tutor/mentor to work with the NQT on a day-to-day basis. In a school with more than one NQT an induction co-ordinator will also be needed. In smaller schools the induction co-ordinator/tutor role may be carried out by the headteacher.
- Headteachers must ensure that an NQT's timetable is 90% of a 'normal average' timetable and that normal Planning Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time is allocated in addition.
Step 2
- Before the NQT takes up employment the school must register the NQT with the Appropriate Body by completing a registration form and returning it to the address below.
Step 3
- Within the first four weeks the NQT should be observed teaching; Transition Point 2 should take place and an action plan constructed based on identified priorities.
- The induction time provided for the NQT should enable them to work towards their targets, regular meetings should take place to monitor progress and provide any necessary support .
Step 4
- Regular assessments should be returned to the address below. You can download the forms from the Teachernet website (see Related Links below).
- Before each meeting a lesson observation and formal review meeting should take place.
The completed assessment forms should be submitted by 30 November, 30th March, 30th June to:
