As many as one in five children may at some time need extra help with their education and they are said to have 'Special Educational Needs'. Most children with Special Educational Needs will attend mainstream schools, with additional support provided where necessary.
A minority of children may benefit from the gentler routine, the smaller groups, or the very specialised teaching and educational aids available in special schools and classes. This will be done in consultation with parents and professionals, and following a full formal assessment.
This provision would be made at the local mainstream school, or at a school or unit which has additional resourcing to meet particular needs. As far as possible, the Council seeks to meet pupils' Special Educational Needs in a mainstream setting.
Our Special Educational Needs Policy is based on the guidance provided by the government in the Code of Practice and is aimed at professionals. There is a summary of the main points in the 'SEN a guide for parents and carers' document on the teachernet.gov.uk web site.
