Have you taught in the past and want to return to teaching?
If you have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a DfES (formerly DfEE) number, your qualification will still be valid.
For those wanting to return to teaching after a career break, the University of Northampton offers Return to Teaching courses for both Primary and Secondary.
The course is designed to support qualified teachers and provides opportunities to update teachers' knowledge and understanding of current educational practice, reflect on previous experience and relate to current practice.
For more information, please contact the university on 01604 892754 or email study@northampton.ac.uk or click on the Return to Teaching Course link in the Related Links section at the bottom of this page.
Remind yourself what teaching offers
Why not arrange a local school visit to talk with the teachers. Schools are busy places but teachers will usually give you support and encouragement.
Financial support for returning teachers
If you go on a TDA funded returners course you will receive a training bursary of up to £150 a week up to a maximum of £1,500. You may also get childcare support worth £150 per week for every child up to the age of five years old and £70 per week for every child aged between five and 14 years, for a maximum of 12 weeks.
If you find a course that meets your needs but not your pocket, you may be eligible for a Career Development Loan. This is a DfES-sponsored programme to assist those who wish to undertake vocational training.
Job share
You may prefer to return to teaching part-time, job-share or through supply teaching. If you are looking for a job share it may be worthwhile pairing up with another job-seeker to present yourselves as a complete professional package.
Looking for a job
Teaching jobs are advertised on the School Vacancies webpage . Jobs are also advertised in the local press and national educational press.
