The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative founded and co-ordinated by the Tree Council to enhance the environment by promoting the planting and conservation of trees and woods. The scheme in Northamptonshire has been running since 1991.
- Tree Wardens help gather information relating to the community's stock of trees by recording present details of trees and woodlands.
- They act as a vital link between the community, authorities and the district Tree Officer who are responsible for the care and maintenance of trees and Tree Preservation Orders by informing them of any adverse activities relating to trees.
- Tree Wardens may also encourage and organise practical projects that involve the local community which raise awareness of the importance of trees, woodlands and their local environment.
- Some parishes or wards within the county may appoint several wardens but whether there is one or more in post, the amount of time devoted to the scheme is decided by the individual.
Northamptonshire Tree Wardens receive a regular newsletter, Tree Council News.
