Fermyn Woods Country Park - Things To Do

Things to do

  • Enjoy a picnic lunch in the meadows or a BBQ in our special BBQ area.
  • Find out more about the park and its Wildlife or buy a souvenir of your visit
    from the Country Park shop.
  • Stop, Look and Listen for the birds – inhabitants and visitors to the park
    include Red Kites, Hawfinch, Nightingales, Skylark and Green Woodpeckers.
  • Have an adventure – the safe, enclosed children's play area has equipment for both toddlers and older children.
  • Take a break – ice-creams, snacks, hot and cold drinks available from the Skylark Cafe.
  • Pick up a Park Discovery Pack – plenty of activities, trails and fun for all the family.
  • Join in one of the many events held at the park as part of the annual events programme.
  • Navigate your way around the park – Orienteering Packs available.
  • Cast off – enjoy a spot of coarse fishing. Day tickets available.
  • Stretch Your legs –  try one of our three circular trails – from an Easy Access stroll to a more challenging Forest Trail.
  • Gateway to the Rockingham Forest - explore further afield - visit Brigstock village or nearby Lyveden New Bield. Walk leaflets and further information available from the Visitor Centre.
  • Enjoy the view - take in the scenery of the park and its surroundings. Try looking out from the Refuge Pond viewing platform or the Village View Point.
  • Watch the Wildlife - look out for signs of Badgers and Fallow Deer, dragonflies and Great Crested Newts, Cowslips and Bluebells.

Get involved

Fermyn Woods Country Park is managed for the benefit of both its wildlife and its human visitors. The Countryside Rangers and our many volunteers are constantly striving to develop and enhance facilities at the park. We need your help to continue this work – why not join our team of volunteers - (01536) 373625 for more details. Schools or other community groups can take part in Environmental Activity Sessions run by the Countryside Rangers. For more information or to book a session please contact the Countryside Rangers.


Wonderful wildlife

The varied natural and man-made habitats of the park from the open grassland to ancient woodland provide a refuge for many species of wildlife. 

  • Ponds provide homes for sticklebacks, breeding newts and dragonflies.
  • Grasslands and hay meadows are home to grasses and wild flowers such
    as Bee Orchid and Bird's Foot Trefoil.
  • Carefully managed scrubland or thickets provides nesting sites for birds such as the Bullfinch, whilst sunny clearings are ideal for Black Hairstreak butterflies
  • Extensive woodland is home to Badgers and Fallow Deer, the Purple Emperor butterfly, the Red Kite and the Nightingale, and woodland plants such as Bluebells, Primroses and autumn fungi.

Gateway to Rockingham Castle

Why not take the opportunity to explore further afield?
  • Brigstock village – honey-coloured stone houses, Collyweston slate roofs, a late Saxon church, two pubs and an Elizabethan market cross.
  • Lyveden New Bield – an unfinished garden lodge begun in 1595 by Thomas Tresham. National Trust. (01832) 205358. Admission charge.
  • Hunt for the Bocase Stone – said to mark the site of the Norman Forest Courts.
  • Wander out to Wadenhoe and the River Nene – link up with the Nene Way Footpath.
