9,598 customers completed questionnaires as part of the Adult Public Library User Survey (APLUS) which ran in all public libraries in Northamptonshire, during September and October 2006 and we received over 3,600 written comments.
The comments and the results have been invaluable in helping us develop the service. We have used customer comments and the survey results to create action plans to take the service forward to the next user survey in 2009.
The survey results have provided us with an excellent overview of what our customers think of their local library and the service overall and helped us improve our knowledge of our customers and their needs:
- 90% were satisfied overall
- 97% were satisfied with staff helpfulness
- 91% rated libraries as safe places to visit
- 4 out of 5 rated the physical condition of books as very good or good and nearly three quarters were satisfied with the choice of books
- 65.5% were female and 34.5% male
- 1 in 5 was aged between 35 and 44. This was the largest age group for library visitors and for Northamptonshire’s population (Census 2001)
- Just under half were in employment (full-time, part time or self-employed)
- 1 in every 20 was from a non white ethnic background
