Types of Full library membership

There are different types of Full library memberships available:

Adult (16+)

  • Your details will be entered onto our system - you will have the opportunity to check your details and then you will be given your ticket.
  • You will be asked to sign your ticket immediately in front of a member of staff.

Concessionary

  • Customers with a print disability, for example visual impairment or dyslexia, are entitled to concessionary rates for reading materials which are usually charged for, currently Books on Tape and CD.
  • If you think you are eligible - please let a member of staff know.

Children (under 12) with their families:

  • Your details will be entered onto our system and then you will be given your ticket.
  • Your Guarantor* must sign this immediately.
  • Children are able to borrow child items only.

Accompanied Children (under 12) without a Guarantor*:

  • If the child is accompanied by a family friend, nanny, professional carer, brother or sister, they will be handed a Consent Letter for the guarantor to sign.
  • A ticket can be given once the signed consent is returned to the library.

Young Adults (12 - 15) with their families

  • Your details will be entered onto our system and then you will be given your ticket.
  • Your Guarantor* must sign this immediately.
  • Young Adults are able to borrow adult items as well as child items.

* A Guarantor is defined as:

  • a parent
  • a grandparent
  • a legal guardian
  • Role of the Guarantor:
    • Overdues will be sent to the guarantor
    • They are responsible for the return and the care of items borrowed on the ticket
    • They are responsible for what the child or young adult selects to borrow and their use of resources (including computers and Internet access) in the library

Unaccompanied Children and Young Adults

  • We will post, or hand to a child (if local), a letter to parents/guarantor, asking for a guarantor's signature to confirm that they agree to their child joining the library.
  • A ticket will be given once the signed consent is returned to the library.
  • The leaflet detailing our charges will be included with the letter
  • When the child returns with the signed permission the staff will write the child's name on the ticket
  • The guarantor must sign the ticket - they can either come into the library to sign the card, or they can sign the ticket at home with the child.

Children Transferring to Young Adult Membership

    • If they are accompanied by a parent/carer, the transfer can be completed immediately on screen.
    • If the child is unaccompanied, a letter will be sent to the parents/guarantor asking for a signature to agree to the change. The signature does not have to be the original guarantor.

    Housebound

    • If you are joining on behalf of a housebound relative, their details will be added to the system and ticket given immediately.
    • In order to comply with the Data Protection Register we will later telephone that person to confirm their details.

    Playgroups or other group membership

    • Evidence that the requesting person does represent the organisation concerned will be required, for example a note from the Manager.
    • Some libraries keep these tickets at the library to save confusion.
