How did Jumpball come about?
 |
Jumpball is based on the American Basketball programme 'Midnight Basketball', whereby basketball is delivered in the local community. |
The project targets young people with diverse needs, aged 13 and over, offering them sport and educational workshops within their community.
The purpose of Jumpball
The purpose of Jumpball is to offer a recreational activity to stimulate the behaviour of young people, by providing diversionary activities as leisure opportunities and life skill training in their local community.
Jumpball Objectives
- To introduce young people to the game of basketball
- To increase the level of physical activity with young people
- To support the learning needs for young people
- To provide a safe and positive environment for young people and encourage them to participate in mainstream society
- To divert young people from crime and anti-social behaviour
- To discuss with young people, issues that affect them in everyday life
The Jumpball programme is set up in specifically targeted areas, for example areas with high levels of Anti-Social Behaviour.
It must be noted however, that the Jumpball programme is not just a basketball session, it is run for groups that are potentially "at risk" of committing crime and Jumpball is seen as a potentially diversionary programme.
If you would like further information on when and where the next Jumpball programme will be taking place please see the contact details on the right.
