Local Safeguarding Children Board Northamptonshire review and response arrangements for the deaths of children.
From 1 April 2008 the Local Safeguarding Children Board Northamptonshire and its partner agencies will implement new arrangements for reviewing and responding to the deaths of children.
These arrangements will be coordinated by a Committee of the Board and supported on a day to day basis by a Consultant Paediatrician and administrator working within the local NHS Trusts.
For children who die unexpectedly the current response arrangements, which generally involve the Health Service and Northamptonshire Police acting on behalf of the Coroner, will be enhanced by the coordinated involvement of all agencies involved with the child and their family.
The aim is to provide a service which both establishes why the child has died and ensures the child's family are given the best possible support in their bereavement.
The Committee of the Local Safeguarding Children Board Northamptonshire will also meet regularly to review the circumstances surrounding the deaths of those children who die or who are normally resident in the county.
Through this the Local Safeguarding Children Board intends to identify and act upon any issues which may reduce the number of children who die, as well as improving services for those children whose deaths cannot be avoided and their families.
Independent Chair of the Local Safeguarding Children Board Northamptonshire, Chris Few said: "The death of any child is a tragedy, for the child, their family and friends and for the community.
"We must do everything possible to reduce the number of children who die in Northamptonshire and these new arrangements are intended to do that.
"Sadly however, there will still be children who do die, and for these children and their families the Safeguarding Children Board is determined to ensure that the services provided by all agencies prior to and following the child's death are both effectively coordinated and the best that they can be."
Notes to news editors:
The Child Death Review and Response arrangements are being implemented by the Local Safeguarding Children Board in accordance with Chapter 7 of Working Together to Safeguard Children (2006).
