New LRE Pack: Next Steps into Library Skills Designed to be used by teaching staff and librarians to support and facilitate the development of pupils' independent learning and information handling skills, this pack builds information skills that children have learned from the literacy framework of the Primary National Strategy. Children can then use these skills in the school library to develop their independent research and learning. Learn how to plan their research, know where and how to find relevant information and, most importantly, how to sort and use information for their particular topic.
Next Steps is for use by KS2 pupils and is produced for Years 5 and 6, with individual workbooks for pupils and notes to support teachers & teaching assistants. For each year group there are six one-hour units of work which focus on non-fiction books and one unit based on a fiction book.
Next Steps into Library Skills (Y5/6) is available for LRE subscribing schools for £50 + £3p&p . The price for non-subscribing schools is £75 including postage. The pack includes Teaching Plans and Pupil Workbooks in both print and CD-Rom versions and the LRE Track it Down Subject Index in booklet form.

Sharing Good Practice In Primary School Libraries
Denfield Park Junior School library shows how good display on bay ends and notice boards can be used to link books and information across the curriculum, as well as providing a focus for specific events such as World Book Day. They have also created a special storytelling area with a Storytellers Chair. |

LRE Storysacks Storysacks are a popular way of encouraging parents and carers to start sharing stories with their children, especially those parents with little positive experience of books. They can also be used in "Buddying" between older and younger children.

LRE Primary School Library Shelf Guiding Labels
To support children in becoming independent users of the library and more familiar with the Dewey system, Learning Resources for Education have created a set of shelf guiding labels for use in the school library. The set comprises 5 sheets containing 90 laminated, coloured library shelf labels plus an A4 library guide.
The labels include a three-figure Dewey class number plus the relevant term and visual clue to assist children in confidently finding their way around the non-fiction stock in their school library. It is not intended for schools to use all the labels, but to select those which most closely meet their library stock and curriculum needs.
The shelf guiding labels set costs £10 plus postage and packing for subscribing schools. For non-subscribing schools the price is £12.50 plus postage and packing. To order please e-mail LRE at lre@northamptonshire.gov.uk or contact us on 01604 773930. Please note that we cannot invoice for amounts below £50 so a cheque would be required made payable to Northamptonshire County Council.
