If you live in one of the areas where there is a Residents’ Parking Permit scheme in operation, you can apply for a permit by completing an application form, which can be obtained from the Parking Shop (see address details below).

The Parking Shop is open from 8:30am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday and 9:00am - 1:30pm on Saturdays (excluding bank and public holidays).
The cost of an annual permit is currently £25.00; however this charge is currently under review. Your vehicle registration number is printed on the permit, which allows you to park in a resident parking bay Monday to Saturday 8:00am to 6:00pm (8:00am to 10:00pm in St James).
You can apply and pay for your permit either in person or by post at the Parking Shop (see address details above).
There is currently no limit to the amount of residents’ parking permits people have at an address, just as long as the vehicles are registered at that address.
You must provide the following documentation:
- Proof of residency such as utility bill, tenancy agreement, bank statement, which must not be older than 3 months
- Vehicle insurance document or vehicle registration document showing your name and address
Permits will not be issued if:
- A vehicle is overweight (up to 1,525 kg unladen weight or 3,500kg gross weight).
- Incomplete documents are received
- Photocopied information is provided
- Maximum number of permits have been issued, eg more than one visitors permit or more than two permits per business.
Other circumstances
Visitor Permits
A visitor permit can be provided free of charge for each property included in a Resident's Permit Scheme. Visitor permits are valid Monday to Saturday 10:00am to 6:00pm (10:00am to 10:00pm in St James)
Business Permits
Business permits are available at a cost of £250 per year, £125 for 6 months and £62.50 for 3 months. Up to two permits are allowed per business and they are valid Monday to Saturday 8:00am – 6:00pm (8:00am to 10:00pm in St James). Permits will not be issued if off-street parking is available.
Temporary Permits
If you have recently moved to a property where a Parking Permit Scheme is in operation, a temporary permit can be issued for 2 months to allow you time to update your documentation or insure your vehicle at the new property. A maximum of 2 consecutive temporary permits can be issued.
Replacement Permits
If you lose your permit a replacement can be obtained but an administrative fee of £5 will be charged. If your permit has been stolen you must report this to the police immediately and providing you are able to give us a crime reference, a replacement will be issued free of charge.
Company Cars
A resident who has a company car and does not have the registration or insurance documents will need to provide the following details on headed notepaper:
- Confirmation that they are employed by the company, your name, your address, make, model and registration of the company vehicle.
- Proof of residency will also be required..
- A letter from the keeper of the vehicle granting permission for the applicant to keep the vehicle at the address the permit is required for. The letter must also state the make,model and registration number of the vehicle.
Students
Students currently living in Northampton, at a property within one of the Resident Permit Schemes are able to apply for a permit provided they have the following documents:
- Proof of residency such as a tenancy agreement showing their address in Northampton.
- Insurance policy showing the registration number of the vehicle and their address in Northampton.
Full permits will not be issued unless the above documents state the students address in Northampton.
A temporary permit can be issued, valid for 2 months, for use whilst documents are being reissued to show the students address in Northampton. A maximum of 2 consecutive temporary permits can be issued.
Change of Vehicle
If a resident changes their vehicle whilst their permit is still valid then they are eligible to obtain a permit for the new vehicle as long as they can supply proof that they are the keeper of the vehicle.
Proof of purchase can be accepted but this is at the discretion of Northamptonshire County Council.
The applicant must return their old permit which will have the details of their previous vehicle. If this is done then the replacement permit will be issued free of charge for the remaining period that the original permit was for.
If the old permit is not returned, then this will have to be treated as a new application and the normal documents will be required and the usual fee charged.
