The Council cuts grass to ensure that people can use roads and pavements safely. Although environmental issues are of paramount concern, grass cutting is actually carried out for highway safety reasons rather than environmental purposes.
What grass won't the County Council cut?
We do not cut the grass that is not on the highway. For example, grass which is:
- privately owned
- on land owned by bodies other than the County Council, eg parks and public open spaces
What grass will the County Council Cut?
The County Council is responsible for cutting all grass on the highway, eg roundabouts and verges.
However, within the town areas of Corby, Daventry, Kettering, Northampton and Wellingborough, the district and borough councils have taken over the responsibility and generally carry out grass cutting to a higher standard than the County Council could provide for purely safety reasons. Also certain Parish Councils have taken over responsibility for grass cutting in their villages, and again provide a higher standard.

How often do we cut the grass?
The County Council does not require a specified number of cuts to be carried out, but it requires grass to be cut to ensure that it stays below specified maximum heights. These heights vary accordingly to the location of the area of grass and the times of year. This is achieved throughout the growing season through a series of cycles of grass cutting which is designed to the height specification is met.
