What is a dangerous road junction?
A dangerous road junction will be a site where there have been a high number of road accidents.
Many of the concerns we receive in relation to dangerous road junctions relate to a "perceived" danger and the site may not necessarily be classified as a dangerous junction.
Common concerns include a problem of high vehicle speeds when travelling through the site or where the general layout of the junction is considered hazardous to other road users such as pedestrians or cyclists.
What does the County Council do about dangerous junctions?
We carry out a continual assessment of the road network to determine safety of individual routes and road junctions.
The information used to carry out this assessment comes from a number of sources including, Police accident reports, traffic flow data, traffic speed data, Parish Councils and individual concerns raised by members of the public.
Where a junction or route has been identified as having a high number of killed or serious injury accidents (4 or more over a three year period) the site will automatically form part of a Red Route remedial programme of works and will be subject to targeted enforcement, education and engineering measures.
How do I know if a junction is dangerous?
For a junction to be classified as dangerous there generally has to be evidence to support the claim such as a high number of road accident casualties (as stated above) or excess vehicle speeds for example:- the average speed of all vehicles being above the enforcement limit.
