Learning disabilities

What do we offer people with learning disabilities?

We run or, pay other people, to run lots of different services for people with learning disabilities and their families.

These include:

  • Assessment and care management services. The people who do this are often called social workers
  • Help to live at home. This is called personal care and support or supported living
  • Day services. This includes day centres and help to find jobs
  • Short breaks services which are sometimes called respite care
  • Residential care and adult placements
  • Information, advice and help to speak up. This is called advocacy
  • Transport

In 2004-2005 Community Services (Northants County Council) is helping about 1,200 people with learning disabilities to live at home in the community.

Around 600 people with learning disabilities are living in residential care, including some people living in adult placements. Lots of people are living in residential or nursing care run by the independent or voluntary sector.

How to access Learning Disability Services

If you are new to Community Services and are looking for advice, information, help or support for the first time you should contact the Adult Care Team.

If you are already using a service and are looking for advice, information, help or support you should contact your local learning disability care management team.
