The Sensory Impairment Unit provides a range of specialist services to people across Northamptonshire who are either visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or have a severe sight and hearing loss combined (dual sensory loss/deafblind). Our aim is to assist people with sight and/or hearing loss to achieve full equality of access and the greatest possible safety, independence and control over their lives.
Our services cover six main areas:
- Registration as blind/severely sight impaired or partially sighted/sight impaired and associated assessment of needs.
- Specialist rehabilitation for people with visual impairment following a rehabilitation assessment, eg independent living skills, mobility, communication and low vision.
- Provision of a very limited range of equipment on long term loan to visually impaired people following an assessment and training where appropriate and in accordance with Northamptonshire County Council eligibility criteria.
- Social work service working with profoundly/severely deaf people with specialist communication needs
- Provision of environmental equipment for deaf and hard of hearing people, over and above hearing aids, on long term loan and following assessment by a Technical Officer and in accordance with NCC eligibility criteria.
- A volunteer based Guidehelp Scheme for those assessed as having a severe sight and hearing loss combined.
