Community transport

Community transport is the provision of non-profit making transport for members of the community who do not have suitable conventional public transport services available for their travel needs.

If you are a client of community services, you may be able to arrange transport for appointments connected with your business with them. Your care manager will be able to give you more details.

Community Bus Scheme

Local volunteers are used to provide regular, scheduled bus services based on local need. This non-profit service is a great addition to the community transport programme and allows people who live in more remote or isolated communities with a chance to travel more easily.

Dial a Ride

Dial a Ride schemes operate within a number of areas and allows people who cannot use existing bus services with a local service so that they can shop and use local amenities

The difference between a Dial a Ride and a conventional service lies in the flexible routing and the fact that the vehicles can accommodate wheelchairs.

Passengers need to register with the service in their area to book a journey in advance (by phoning their local scheme before they wish to travel and are picked up at their door).

Dial a Ride schemes have proved to be a great success and extremely popular with those that use them. Without this service, many people would not be able to get out and about and visit shops or make essential trips to the post office, bank etc.

Minibus Group Hire

Minibus group hire schemes make wheelchair-accessible minibuses available to local community groups at affordable rates. This can be with or without a driver.

Northampton Door to Door Service (NDDS)

Specialists in transporting residents of Northampton who cannot use normal public transport because of age or permanent or temporary disability.

This service will pick you up at your door and take you to any destination within the Borough of Northampton. All NDDS vehicles are specially built to allow access for wheelchairs and electric scooters. There are specific operating times and a registration fee applies. Please call 01604 583553 for more information or 01604 587733 for bookings. Alternatively, please click on the related link below.

Voluntary Car Schemes

Voluntary car scheme drivers use their own vehicles to carry those unable to use conventional transport to pre-booked destinations - usually medical appointments - in exchange for a specified mileage charge; an escort may also travel with a passenger for a charge. Passengers book a journey in advance with the scheme co-coordinator who matches up the travel requirement with the drivers available.

The volunteer drivers picks up the client from their home, takes them to their appointment and brings then back home.

For further information on any of the above please contact us using the details on the right hand side.
