What could you inspire a child to do?

My name is Bruce Oldfield |
Even before I was born, my mother had signed an agreement entrusting me into the care of Dr Barnardo’s Homes. I spent the first year or so of my life in several boys’ homes. My father was a Jamaican boxer and I never knew his name.
At the age of 18 months I was fostered for 12 years by a woman who became the only mother I really knew. Her name was Violet Masters. She fostered four other dual-heritage children, who became my brothers and sisters - my family.
Mum was a seamstress, and I loved to watch her sew, copying her embroidery onto scraps pieces of cloth. At eight years old I was making clothes for my sister's dolls. This hobby set me on the path to where I am today - a fashion designer, who’s had the privilege to create clothes for some of the world’s most famous and beautiful women.
I support Northamptonshire County Council’s ‘Somebody to Love’ campaign, which is dedicated to finding foster carers and adoptive families for the black and minority ethnic children who need them. My foster mother gave me love, a home and a family - and the inspiration and determination to take me to where I really wanted to be in the world.
Please show your support for the campaign by finding out how you too could turn a child’s life around by helping them to reach their potential and fulfil their dreams.
I went from making clothes for my sister’s dolls from scraps of cloth, to dressing Diana, Princess of Wales.
