We are committed to supporting children with disabilities and their families.
Local authorities are required by law (The Children Act 1989) to safeguard and promote the interests of children 'in need'. Disabled children are described as being 'in need' under the terms of the Act.
- Direct Payments for disabled children
Direct payments give people with parental responsibility for a disabled child, the entitlement to receive money to pay for services themselves.
- How our services are provided
Services may be provided directly by the Children and Young People's Service or by other agencies such as health, education, voluntary organisations and the private sector.

An initial assessment will be carried out by the referral team to determine whether or not your child meets the eligibility criteria for a further assessment and services from the Disabled Children's Service Team.

At the end of the assessment process, details of the services that you will receive will be set out in a Family Support Statement.
- Moving into adulthood
Help for young disabled people to ensure that they receive the necessary support to help them plan for their future and to achieve their goals in adult life.

These are provided as part of an integrated education and social care service that provides support for children from 0 to 19 years with special educational needs or disabilities.
