Lots of young people living in or wanting to work in rural areas that are having transport problems could now get help through NOW.
NOW is a new project which has been designed to assist young people between the ages of 16 and 25 to address their transport problems when looking at further education, training or employment opportunities.
For people living in rural areas of Northamptonshire the lack of transport can be a major barrier to accessing employment, training or further education opportunities.
Young people in particular often face a situation where without a job they cannot afford to buy a car or motorcycle. Without a vehicle of their own, and lacking access to public transport, they cannot travel to work or take part in training courses or further education.
The help young people could receive includes:
- advice and guidance on existing transport provision
- assistance towards first months transport costs to work,
- or in the most rural areas a loan of a moped with full safety training
The project covers the whole of Northamptonshire, and to be eligible the person must be:
- between the ages of 16 and 25
- a resident of Northamptonshire,
- have an offer of a job, training or education, or
- have no means of transport to access opportunities
The project has been funded by the East Midlands Development Agency and the Nationwide Foundation and is being managed by Northamptonshire ACRE with the support of Connexions.
