Frequently asked questions
Below are some questions and answers, which provide important information about visiting us on a Saturday.
Q: At what times can I order documents?
A: Staff will collect document requests slips for catalogued documents at 9:30am, 10:30am and 11:30am. We aim to have the documents ready for you within twenty minutes, but if there are a lot of requests it may take a little longer.
Q: Which original documents can I request on Saturdays?
A: You can request documents that have an individual reference number. Up to four individual items can be requested at one time. The Record Office reserves the right to limit requests for original documents if the Search Room is particularly busy.
Q: Are there any documents that cannot be requested?
A: Documents that do not have an individual description in a catalogue, or which have only a box or other location reference, cannot be viewed on a Saturday morning, but can still be seen during the week.
We will also not be able to produce local government records or Peterborough Diocesan records on Saturday mornings, but these can also be viewed during the week.
Q: Why can I only request catalogued records on a Saturday morning?
A: A request to access documents from within uncatalogued collections can require staff to spend time searching numerous boxes to locate and identify the required documents. This can be a time-consuming and complex process.
As we have three members of staff on duty on Saturdays, we will not be able to allocate staff time to identifying documents from uncatalogued collections. Some collections, such as those of the Peterborough Diocese, are located outside the main repository and can only be accessed Tuesday to Friday.
Some archives do not allow access to uncatalogued collections at all, but the Northamptonshire Record Office does make uncatalogued collections available to the public Tuesday to Friday, where it is possible to do so.
Q: Can I get copies of documents on Saturdays?
A: You are welcome to bring your camera and take photographs of documents, after purchasing a permit and completing a copyright declaration.
We do not offer an ‘on-the-day’ copying service on Saturdays. You can request copies to be made and then posted to you later in the week, but please note that we have a minimum charge for orders sent by post.
Q: Do I need to book a table or microfiche reader on Saturdays?
A: The Record Office does not run a booking system on Saturdays or weekdays.
