When is photocopying available?
No photocopying can be done between 12:00pm and 2:00pm, and after 4:00pm (3:30pm on Fridays).
If this means that you have to leave before your copies are done, we will send them on to you as soon as they are ready.
We cannot provide photocopies of:
- Parchment
- Photostats
- Photographs
We can provide photocopies of the following documents:
Please note: there are some restrictions
| Volumes |
Archival volumes will not be photocopied. This includes parish registers, for which film and fiche are available.
It makes no difference whether the volumes have hard or soft covers, or the nature of the binding.
Published modern volumes are acceptable |
Items larger than A3
|
We will not photocopy large items, tithe and inclosure maps, 25 inch O.S. maps or any items that are rolled, fragile or damaged. 6 inch O.S. maps may be copied providing they are not fragile.
The duty archivist will decide whether it is appropriate to copy or not. |
| Tracings |
We will not copy if larger than A3 or if they are torn, heavily creased or fragile.
The duty archivist will decide whether it is appropriate to copy or not. |
| Seals |
Documents will not be copied if they possess pendant (hanging) or applied (fixed onto the surface) wax seals, those with paper covered seals are allowed (eg bastardy bonds). |
| Postcards |
Printed postcards can be copied but not those that are photographic.
The duty archivist will decide whether it is appropriate to copy or not |
| Hand-coloured Papers |
Printed coloured O.S. maps can be copied.
Items such as watercolours will not be photocopied.
Other items, such as architectural drawings with a colour wash, may be acceptable for copying but should be referred to the duty archivist on an individual basis. |
| Soft medium |
Items with charcoal and pastel drawings and/or text will not be copied. |
| Fragile/damaged records |
Any items which are fragile or damaged will be assessed individually. The presumption will be against copying anything that could be further damaged by the process. |
| Treated documents |
Documents that have received conservation treatment can be copied providing they are flat, individual sheets and that none of the above points apply. |

Any copies made are subject to copyright. Before any copies can be made, we ask you to sign a copyright declaration. If you want to reproduce copies in any way beyond what is allowed on the form, please apply in writing to the County Archivist.
