Use of laptops in Record Office

We aim to provide facilities for users who wish to use personal computers and we recognise that these are an important aid to research. The office has a limited number of electrical sockets and these are allocated on a first come, first served basis. We do not operate any kind of booking system for sockets.

We ask all users to be as considerate as possible to others and to run personal computers from batteries where possible.

We also ask you to observe the following rules and regulations:

  • Only one appliance may be plugged into each socket. Extension cables and multi-way adapters are not allowed as they may constitute a health and safety risk.

  • For security or operational reasons some sockets are not suitable for use with personal computers.

  • On no account must archive material be placed at risk of damage.
    • Sufficient space must be available if documents are to be used at the same desk as a lap top computer. This must take into account use of volume support cushions, melinex pockets or other protective measures.
    • If, in the opinion of the duty archivist, documents may be at risk of damage, we reserve the right to refuse use of a personal computer at the same table. This may apply to the use of maps or other large items.

We request your support in implementing our policy on use of personal computers. Failure to comply with the regulations and disputes with staff or other readers may result in the facility being withdrawn.

Your co-operation is appreciated.
