Assistant Directors

What do Assistant Directors do?

This group of highly capable individuals take responsibility for specific service areas, such Transport and Highways for example. They report directly to a Director or in some cases the Chief Executive. Along with the Corporate Management Team they make up the rest of Northamptonshire County Council’s senior officers.

The huge range of services we deliver are directly overseen by this group of talented and dedicated professionals, managing services such education and schools; the roads and environment; social services for adults and children; libraries, fire and rescue and more.

How was the the Council's senior officer structure decided?

The Council's current structure is the latest step in an ongoing review of our operating structure. This review is designed to reposition the Council to a more commissioning focussed model, and deliver cost efficient services to the citizens of Northamptonshire, whilst bearing in mind the challenges faced by the organisation.

We began in 2008 with the Effective Leadership Review which examined the required professional competencies and skills for senior managers. The Effective Leadership Review the Council made £1.8 million of savings, and by also removing a senior managers bonus scheme a further £350,000 was saved.

We continued to build on the Review and launched the current structure, called the Target Operating Model, in June 2011. The Target Operating Model will deliver in the region of £3.3 million of savings through even more cost effective management of the organisation.

The Target Operating Model is an innovative, effective and necessary response to wider challenges facing the Council:

  • Long term changes in demographics
  • Significant reductions in public sector funding
  • Increasing short term demand for services across the whole Council
  • Recession related increases in demand for social care
  • Changes in central government policy

How much do they get paid?

The publication of the salaries of the senior managers of the county council is done to demonstrate openness and transparency.

We believe that this level of openness provides the opportunity to engage more about how the council operates, what it does for the local community and identifies those responsible for local services positively increasing accountability.
