Newly and Recently Qualified Teachers

Teach Northamptonshire

Since 1999 any teacher gaining QTS must complete an induction period satisfactorily if they are to be eligible to teach in maintained schools. NQTs should  complete induction within 5 years of gaining QTS.

Golden Hello

If you have just completed your Induction period and are teaching certain secondary shortage subjects you may be eligible for claiming a Golden Hello. Eligible teachers will have received a claim form from their ITT provider on completion of training and have 12 months to make a claim, after successful completion of Induction. The TDA provide further guidance on this.

If you are teaching in a Northamptonshire school the procedures can be found in the following document.

NQTs are entitled to receive induction support and training, as such there are limits to the amount of teaching an NQT can do without such support and this impacts principally on supply teaching.

NQT Limit on short-term supply work

There is a 16 month limit which starts on the day that the teacher begins their first short-term supply contract. In effect the 'clock starts ticking' as soon as short-term supply work commences and does not stop during periods when the teacher is not undertaking short-term supply work.

Once the 16 month limit is reached the teacher cannot undertake any further supply work unless an extension has been granted by the Appropriate Body or the post is a supply placement of at least one term and the NQT is serving an induction period.

Extension of the short-term supply limit

NCC may agree to extend the period during which a teacher can undertake short-term supply work beyond the 16 month limit, for a maximum period of 12 months if there are extenuating circumstances, such as illness or personal issues, which have prevented the NQT from completing induction.

The NQT will need to apply in writing to the NQT coordinator if they wish to apply for an extension to their supply eligibility, stating any extenuating circumstances as to why they should be granted an extension.
