Year 11 Children

Why are Year 11 children hard to place?

Year 11 children can be defined as requiring to be placed via the Fair Access protocol. These children are often referred to as hard to place due to difficulties such as:

  • GCSE coursework has almost been completed with mostly revision classes in year 11, certainly from the second term for the remainder of the academic year.
  • Schools do not teach the same subjects with the same syllabuses / exam boards, therefore making it difficult to continue studying the same subject they have already been following at their previous school in year 10.
  • Classes / option groups for particular subjects may already be full therefore not able to continue studying the same subject.
  • A number of schools start GCSE work in Year 9.

Different circumstances

Year 11 children fall into 4 different categories:

Year 11 children moving into the County Despite our best efforts, it is often difficult to ensure that children moving during Year 11 can continue the same subject or exam boards they have been studying at their previous school.
Year 11 children moving into Northamptonshire with English as a second language If a child speaks very little English, the local authority may refer to Northampton College for assessment to access our ESOL (English as a second language) provision currently in place. The aim of this course is to develop basic literacy, numeracy, IT, English and key skills.

The course also provides children who have just moved into the country with basic life skills, cultural awareness and support in obtaining future education or employment.

Year 11 children moving from one part of Northamptonshire to another

For those children who are moving from one part of our county to another, transport may be provided to enable the child to continue to attend their current school in order not to disrupt their GCSE studies.

Please contact our transport department on 0300 126 1000 for further details.

Year 11 children requesting a change of school - no house move We strongly discourage parents requesting to move Year 11 children to an alternative school if this decision is purely due to parental preference.
