Planning Permission
Prior consent must be obtained before a Listed building is demolished or for any alteration or works which would affect its architectural or historic character.
Applications for Listed Building Consent are normally dealt with by the:
rather than the county council.
Grade I
There are 194 Grade I buildings in Northamptonshire - buildings of exceptional historic and architectural interest, however, some are quite small and at first sight seemingly much less grand. There are 377 Grade II listed buildings in the county - buildings of particularly special interest.
The county has some listed 20th century buildings including 'New Ways' designed by the architect Peter Behrens in 1925 which is internationally famous as an example of the work of the Modern Movement.
Grade II
The remaining buildings are Grade II and are designated as being of special interest. These are predominantly 17th and 18th century domestic buildings in villages, but in the towns of Northampton, Wellingborough and Kettering there are many examples of 19th century commercial architecture.

Listed Buildings in the care of the county council
The county council owns a number of listed buildings such as offices and schools, as well as being responsible for the maintenance of bridges and other structures, some of which are Scheduled Ancient Monuments, as part of the highway infrastructure.
