Sites and Monuments Record

What is the sites and monuments record?

The Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) is a public service available to anyone researching the history and archaeology of the county.

It is the main source of information on archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes in the county. It is used to help formulate conservation and planning advice for the county.

Is there a charge to use it?

Access to information in the SMR is free for all enquirers coming into the office to carry out their own searches.

There will be an hourly charge for staff time spent processing information to send out to you should you prefer this service rather than visiting the office yourself.

When is it available?

The SMR is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Due to limited space, appointments must be made in advance.
