Fly tipping

Fly tipping costs local taxpayers over £650,000 to remove and dispose of each year. It is dangerous, unsightly, harmful to the environment and affects you, your family and your community. There are over 1,000 fly tipping incidents that happen in our county every month.

It’s time for us to work together to crack down on fly tipping – we need your help to put a stop to it.

What are my responsibilities?

Whether you are getting rid of rubbish on a regular basis or once in a while, you are legally responsible to ensure it is disposed of properly. This applies even if you are using a tradesperson to take away your rubbish.

Dumping illegally is a serious criminal offence that carries a fine of up to £50,000 (unlimited if the case goes to the Crown Court). You could also face a prison sentence of up to five years for fly tipping.

You will be prosecuted if your rubbish is found fly tipped, regardless of who did it, so it is important that you make sure the person collecting your rubbish is authorised to do so.

This can be done by asking to see their waste carrier licence, or by contacting the Environment Agency

Where can I take my rubbish?

If you are a householder getting rid of excess rubbish yourself, use one of our ten recycling centres which are located across the county. If you have got furniture or bulky items contact your local district or borough council to arrange a bulky waste collection (charges may apply).

If you are a business, four of our recycling centres accept trade waste. Charges apply at these sites on a pay as you go basis and your waste carrier licence will be checked.

What if rubbish is dumped on my land?

We are keen to work with landowners to tackle the local fly tipping issue and have produced an information booklet outlining your responsibilities and the support available to you.

Remember, we are cracking down on flytipping – it is a crime that affects you, your family and your community.  Tip us off if you see it or know about it.
