Our opening times

You do not need to make an appointment to visit us.

Advance notice of closure for a week in December 2016

The Record Office will be closed to customers between 5 and 9 December 2016, to enable us to focus on behind the scenes tasks, which we are unable to undertake when open. We will reopen again as usual on Tuesday 13 December 2016. During the closure week we will not be answering telephone or email enquiries, but emails will be monitored for urgent enquiries, which will be responded to as appropriate.

Requesting original documents

It's great looking at original documents, and the Northamptonshire Record Office has many fascinating collections. You can submit up to four document request slips for each collection time below. However, we sometimes need to reduce the number of requests each person can submit at each collection during very busy days. We aim to have retrieved the documents for you from our repositories within 30 minutes, but we will let you know if there will be a delay.

Please be aware that there is no document production after the 12noon collection until 2pm.

You are welcome to order up to eight original documents in advance of your visit by completing the enquiry form on our contact us page. Please let us have this request at least one working day before you visit, so that we can have the documents ready for you when you arrive. Documents requested with less than one working day's notice may not be ready for you when you arrive, though we will do our best to do so.

Sometimes we will not be able to produce a document because it is too fragile or damaged. When this is the case, we will let you know if we can make it available by other means, such as a digital image. When we can make a digital image of the documents, we would not be able to do this on the same day. Other records may be subject to a legal closure period because of the sensitive nature of their content.

We may, on occasion, give access to uncatalogued material, but customers using such records may be asked to do so under special conditions. The provision of uncatalogued or unnumbered material will be at the discretion of the staff member on duty.

When you have finished looking at original documents

Documents should be returned to the trolley by the staff desk in the Searchroom when you have finished with them. Any documents that are required again the following day may be placed on reserve for you. Please ask a member of staff to do this when you return them.

When you are ready to leave, please reclaim your CARN ticket or day ticket from a member of staff in the Searchroom. The staff at the Reception desk will ask to see your ticket when you leave.
