Gypsies and Travellers do experience problems when accessing health and other welfare services, especially when travelling between unauthorised sites. They also experience difficulties in registering with local Doctors surgeries.
The Countywide Traveller Unit has a Public Health Specialist for Gypsies and Travellers who works as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide a comprehensive service to Travellers in the county.
The post holder is responsible for developing and delivering public health advice and support to a defined population. This includes the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, which are research based.
This will involve visits to authorised and unauthorised Traveller sites and support to housed Traveller within the county on a regular basis in agreement with other team members. It is important to work closely with other team members to specify the interventions, desired outcomes, targets and monitoring information to enable the team to maximise the health gain within the Traveller population.
