Historic and Cultural Environment

People have lived in the area now known as Northamptonshire for more than 10,000 years. They have left a legacy which includes buried archaeology, buildings and townscapes.

  • Conservation areas
    A Conservation Area is an area of particular character which it is desirable to preserve and enhance.

  • County Heritage sites
    Dovecotes, stocks, manors and castles, crosses, monuments, and gates and gateways.

  • Listed Buildings
    There are 194 Grade I and 377 Grade II listed buildings in Northamptonshire.

  • Portable Antiquities Scheme
    Members of the public can have their finds identified and archaeologically recorded by Finds Liaison Officers.

  • Registered Battlefields
    English Heritage's Register of Historic Battlefields identifies areas of historic significance in England where important battles took place.

  • Registered Historic Parks and Gardens
    Northamptonshire currently has 30 nationally important, designed landscapes on the register.

  • Scheduled Ancient Monuments
    There are just 175 Scheduled Monuments in Northamptonshire - some have visible upstanding remains.

  • Sites and Monuments Record
    The main source of information on archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes in the county

Archaeology

The county council provides advice and guidance in relation to the archaeological implications of proposed development - see the archaeology and planning page.

The council also separately runs an organisation on a commercial basis that provides a full range of archaeological services including surveys, excavation, and recording.
