Flytipping

We are working with the Environment Agency and the District and Borough Councils, to try to tackle this ongoing problem and it remains a high priority.

Think about the cost to you

  • Illegally dumped waste degrades your local environment and is harmful to children, pets and wildlife
  • If you flytip your rubbish or allow it to be flytipped on your behalf, you could be fined up to £50,000, be imprisoned and get a permanent criminal record.
  • As a Northamptonshire taxpayer you paid over £750,000 last year alone on clearing and disposing of dumped rubbish

Where can rubbish be disposed of legally?

If you have excess household waste or large appliances or furniture to dispose of, please use one of our recycling centres located around the county. Alternatively contact your local borough or district council to request a bulky waste collection (charges may apply).

If you are disposing of business, commercial or non-household waste you will not be able to use the HWRC free of charge. At present only Ecton Lane HWRC accepts trade waste for a fee.

We suggest visiting the Northamptonshire Waste Network website or consulting the yellow pages for more information on disposal facilities and waste carriers in Northamptonshire.

What if I pay a tradesperson to dispose of my rubbish?

You are legally responsible for the safe disposal of your rubbish. If your waste is found to have been flytipped, regardless of who actually deposited it, you personally will be fined up to £5000. If you employ someone to undertake work in your home or garden and they remove any of your waste undertake the following checks.

  • Ask if they are an authorised waste carrier, registered with the Environment Agency
  • Ask to see their purple coloured A4 sized certificate or green and white credit card certification
  • If you are in any doubt telephone the Environment Agency on 01522 785901 or go to their website to search the Public Registers to check they are registered waste carriers.

What is the Duty of Care?

If you are a business or industry, the Duty of Care applies to you. Commercial, industrial, household wastes and Special Wastes are classified as controlled waste.

The Duty of Care applies to all Controlled Waste this means that waste materials produced as part of your business or within your workplace are regulated by law and are subject to the Duty of Care.
