Q: How can I find out what is planned for the area in which I live?
A: The longer term plans for your local area are set out in a Local Plan. This contains the policies and proposals on which planning applications are decided. All the district and borough councils in Northamptonshire have a Local Plan, and these deal with all matters except minerals (e.g. quarries) and waste-related development; the County Council has separate Local Plans for minerals and waste. Due to changes in the planning system, over the next couple of years Local Plans will be replaced by Local Development Frameworks.
For more information on the county’s minerals and waste plans visit the minerals and waste planning webpage or use the contact details below.

Q: What will be the difference between Minerals and Waste Local Plans and the Minerals and Waste Development Framework?
A: The main vehicle for setting the context for planning decisions on minerals and waste development has, up to now, been the Local Plan. However, under changes to the planning system, minerals and waste local plans are being replaced and Minerals and Waste Development Frameworks (MWDFs) are taking their place. Unlike, the Local Plan, which is a comprehensive document covering the whole of its area, the MWDF is actually the name given to a portfolio of individual ‘Local Development Documents’ (LDDs). Together, these LDDs will cover that which is necessary to set out the future land-use planning context for an area and promote good planning within it.

Q: Who actually deals with planning matters- is it the county council or the district and borough councils?
A: The County Council is responsible for all matters associated with minerals and waste development, including setting the land-use policies and determining planning applications for such development; it also deals with planning applications for the County Council’s own development such as schools, libraries and roads.
All other local planning matters are dealt with by the district and borough councils of Northamptonshire. For more information on the county council’s planning role visit the Environment section
